Single Handed Exegesis

Single Handed details my and my parents’ lived experiences with disability through a scrapbook publication which provides able-bodied parents with an insight into raising a child with an upper limb difference.

The publication design is inspired by scrapbook publications, using techniques and methods often used in scrapbooking, annotation, collage, and illustration. Through marking up and altering personal photographs, scrapbooking helps unpack emotions by adding context that cannot be seen in the original photos. Notes and scribbles over imagery throughout Single Handed, expand on my experiences of disability, providing insight into disabled experiences.

Single Handed covers all aspects of upper limb difference, from prosthetics to representation, and aims to challenge perceptions on disability by sharing disabled perspectives in a positive way. With a playful, illustrative, collage approach and the use of bright risograph printing, the publication fosters an inclusive, positive feeling. Pink ink is used to represent love and inclusion, whilst reflecting newfound joy and confidence in being disabled.

The display typeface chosen for the publication also reflects confidence in being different. The unique and beautiful letter forms stand out, reflecting how physical disabilities stand out and portray upper limb differences as beautiful because they are unique.
